Region of Waterloo- P&ID Standard Development

The Region of Waterloo hired C3 Water to assist in developing a Water Services specific process flow diagram (PFD) and process and instrumentation diagram (P&ID) standard.  Standard development proves very useful in the design of new facilities, upgrades, expansions and maintenance of existing water infrastructure. The standard provides a consistent representation of the current water services system and leads to an increased understanding and knowledge of the Region’s water supply and treatment processes and facilities.

City of Guelph- FM Woods Sodium Hypochlorite System Upgrade

In 2015, City of Guelph Water Services identified the need for a replacement sodium hypochlorite system at the FM Woods Water Treatment Plant. The FM Woods WTP constitutes the largest supply of water to the City and as such its operational reliability is extremely important. The existing sodium hypochlorite dosing system, installed in 2005, consisted of PVC piping complete with glued joints and was prone to leaks. In addition the existing diaphragm metering pumps are prone to solids buildup and required frequent maintenance.

Region of Halton- Prospect Park Water Facilities Treatment Strategy Review

The objective of the project was to review the plan to expand the treatment capacity at the Prospect Park Water Facilities (PPWF) to support future growth, while improving operability.  The key issues to address was a highly variable raw water ammonia concentration which rendered the iron and manganese pre-oxidation process almost impossible to control.  This was particularly true given the long reaction time required to address chelated manganese resulting in significant process dead time.  Mitigation of downstream impacts on filter media, disinfection process and chemical water balance, as well as improved operability were desired outcomes of the study.  C3W lead the investigation for problem definition, identification and evaluation of alternative solutions, pilot scale projects, and recommendation of a preferred solution.

Region of Halton Water Model Update & Control Narratives

The Region of Halton utilizes Infowater modeling software to model the Region’s water supply and distribution system. The water model includes all watermains in the Region’s system and was updated in 2009 as part of the Master Planning process.

In preparation for the next Master Plan and to help prioritize capital infrastructure and optimize operations, the Region’s Water Planning department began an update and calibration project on their water model. Extensive field testing was completed by the Region to gather pump and station data.

Regional Municipality of Waterloo- Middleton Water Treatment Plant Asset Inventory & Condition Assessment

The Region of Waterloo, Water Services Division, hired C3 Water Inc. to facilitate a full multi-disciplined asset inventory and condition assessment of the Middleton Water Treatment Plant. The plant is located on Middleton Street in Cambridge. The plant is the City’s largest water supply consisting of five (5) groundwater wells, a well pump to waste facility, a UV/hydrogen peroxide advanced oxidation treatment process, in-ground storage with sodium hypochlorite for primary and secondary disinfection, and a high lift pumping station. The plant has gone through numerous expansions since first being commissioned in the 1890’s. Much of the infrastructure from the originally spring collector fed water supply remains intact on the site on the site. The latest upgrade was completed to address rising trichloroethylene (TCE) concentrations and microbiological concerns related to the impact of surface water on the supply wells.
