WEAO Student Design Competition Winners!

Congratulations to former C3 Water University of Guelph co-op students, Kelly Ward and Jeffrey Stevens, for their design team’s recent win at the WEAO Student Design Competition! Matt Phillips had the pleasure of mentoring the team as an industry advisor to review their solution for the Optimization of Side Stream Treatment at the Mid-Halton WWTP for Halton Region. Best of luck competing at WEFTEC, Chicago in the fall!

Staff Testimonial- Sabrina Chang

Water Specialist- Intermediate: Sabrina Chang, B.A.Sc., E.I.T.

Hybrid Work Environment & Industry Association Highlights: I am grateful to work in a hybrid work environment that allows me to complete hydraulic modelling, design and contract administration from home, while still getting the opportunity to gain hands-on experience during construction inspection and field investigations with our multi-disciplinary team. A benefit of working at C3 Water is the encouragement and support to be actively involved in industry associations and conferences. I have had the opportunity to present at Ontario Water Works Association (OWWA) and Water Environment Association of Ontario (WEAO) conferences. C3 Water has supported my role as the current Chair of the WEAO Young Professionals Committee, which is a unique opportunity that I don’t think I would have at many other work places.

Small Team and Work Environment Highlights: I can’t stress enough how valuable it has been to work with the multi-disciplinary team at C3 Water. I have had the opportunity to take on significant roles in a variety of water/wastewater projects including hydraulic modelling, master plan updates, inventory and condition assessments, standards development, and design and construction administration and inspection. I have learned so much in my first four (4) years by being involved in different types of projects and have had the opportunity to lead projects in a project manager role. The variety of work and the ability to figure out what types of projects I enjoy and excel at early in my career has been rewarding. This will help me become a more well-rounded engineer in the future. C3 Water supports me in pursuing projects and work that interests me and values my opinion of where I want to develop my career.

Staff Testimonial- Brad Sun

Water Specialist- Entry Level: Brad Sun, B.Sc., Materials Science & Engineering

I joined C3 Water about 7 months ago. As a new graduate, I was able to experience many aspects of engineering and received a tremendous amount of support along the way. Some of my current responsibilities include assisting in the engineering design of various water treatment plant upgrades across the Waterloo Region, modelling and completing hydraulic analysis of new developments, and gaining hands-on experience through on-site inspection of construction projects. It has been the most fruitful learning experience I’ve ever had, thanks to the mentorship of our team and expensed professional training courses. The career development and performance review meetings have also helped me to set great career and technical development goals, while receiving advice from experienced professionals on how to achieve my goals. I also really enjoy our work environment – although I spend most of my time working from home, I have still built a great relationship with our tight-knit team by booking time in the office and through social events.

Here is a photo from this year’s summer event, where I earned my silly hat by being the best loser in yard games.

Michelle Scott, B.A.Sc., EIT, Water Specialist- Intermediate

To work at C3W is to be part of a team where each member is encouraged and supported to succeed in the water industry. I was given the opportunity as a junior EIT to dip my toes into a wide range of roles such as design, site inspection, hydraulic modelling, project management, technical writing and public speaking through participation at industry events. As I’ve gained more experience through the years, I’ve been able to shift my focus to the areas that interest me the most. Throughout my time at C3W I’ve been grateful for the part that I’ve been able to play in growing the company and also for how this job has allowed me to grow.
